Question by red: If i want to juice fast, can i also keep taking my low calorie protein shakes?
i want to start juice fasting for 30 days for weight loss. Ive been going to the gym for the past 3 weeks, 4 days a week, and weight lifting. after each workout i drink a low calorie protein shake to build my strength. i really dont want to lose alot of muscle during this process but i know thats what happens during fasting. any advice or suggestions on what i can do or not do to keep most of my muscle while juice fasting?

Congratulations for considering ways to losing unhealthy fat. I choose to follow a water fast regime every six months or so to improve my body weight and overall health. A water fast allows you to consume nothing but pure distilled water or well water for five days or more under the direct supervision of a medical professional.

The reason I do not practice a juice fast is the fact that your body understands the transition to a non-eating state more quickly and the body starts burning fat more quickly. Dr. Joel Fuhrman is regarded as the guru of water fasting and presents an easy to understand book called “Fasting and Eating for Health.” He believes that eating a “whole plant based diet” is far more important than the fast itself.

If you intend to go on a program for 30 days without medical supervision, then you need to consume a balanced diet that is high in nutrition. Just drinking juice is damaging for this period of time according to the experts I count on. If you research the liquid diets offered by medically supervised clinics, you will find that the drinks contain a high level of casein (cow milk protein). Consumption of casein is linked to tumor growth (Professor T. Colin Campbell and many others).

I believe in optimal nutrition diets and believe that you could use a powerful blender (2 HP) such as the Vitamix to create a balanced liquid diet that can be healthy and even delicious. Here is what you need at bear minimum:

– Leafy greens such as kale, collards, and other leafy greens. These provide you with calcium, iron, and protein. (mostly raw)

– Whole grains such as brown rice and quinoa add some important protein components.

– Legumes such as peas, beans, and lentils add another important complementary protein component that match up with the whole grains.

– Whole fruits. Consider blending them rather than juicing because the fiber in a blended drink is very healthy.

– Vegetables (raw and steamed).

– Ground flax seed for Omega-3 fatty acids.

– You will want to add vitamin D if you don’t get sun exposure. If you are low in B12 and eat only vegetables, you will want to eat foods rich in this or take a supplement.

I am also considering a liquid diet for 30 days, however, I will discuss how I can include a balanced and enzyme rich diet with my naturopathic physician. I suggest you consult with a medical professional who is also an expert in vegan nutrition.
